Coyote – Just Like A Human

An attempt to lift my spirits.

I woke up this morning in a grumpy mood which is unusual for me.

But grumpy turned to foul when I saw the temps that are expected around here for the next four days. During the night an already blistering forecast had turned hellacious, especially for Wednesday. So in an effort to cheer myself up a little I immediately abandoned my planned post and looked for something a little more… lighthearted.

As much as can be expected the following photo does it for me. For some reason, amusement is nearly always one of my reactions when I see critters behaving in ways that we tend to associate exclusively with humans. In my case, my sophomoric sense of humor is almost certainly part of the equation.

1/500, f/7.1, ISO 100, Canon 7D, EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM @ 250mm, not baited, set up or called in

Whom amongst us has never sat on the throne in the morning… and yawned?

I have a feeling I’ll be coming back to this photo several times this week, especially on Wednesday.

Happy Labor Day everyone. And don’t forget to smile – come hell, high water or blistering temperatures.

Ron

  1. What a gorgeous set of teeth on that critter! And a veterinarian’s dream oral exam “Open wide, please…”

Please stay safe, everyone, with these awful temperatures.

  2. I will hiss and spit at those temperatures on your behalf. You need all the moisture you have (and then some).
Love that yawn, even if it started me off.

  3. Great photo! Yes it is hot I just came in from working outside since 7am. More birds weathering, got hummer cage ready and watch the two new hummers, fruit to pick and pull a few weeds.

  4. What is it about a yawn no matter who it is that I must do it too❗️
Well this might make you feel better..
Today 114, tomorrow 115 , Wednesday 109 Thursday 113 Friday 110…..so so ready for cooler weather.
    Be safe everyone☺️

  5. Wow what a picture. A yawn or in pain! I am sure it is a yawn. A high heat index in my neck of the woods. At least it cools down at night in the 50s. Going to have snow before I am ready. Stay calm and cool is you can, relax for a few days!

  6. It’s been hitting 106 to 108 where I live, and people (and their gardens) have had enough of it. It can be seen in the faces of the folks we meet whenever we venture out of the house.

Your photo today was a welcome bit of humor that I think most will also find some mutual recognition in as well.

On a simpler note. Yes, I giggled out loud when I saw it. Thanks for that Ron.

  7. I have a friend who loves coyotes who would definitely put this picture on his wall.

  8. It’s hard to get my head around those temps. We had 35C here (95F) for around 2 weeks in July and with high humidity (and even with a minisplit ‘cool room’) I ended up with a splitting headache no Tylenol would touch, and nausea. The only thing that helped was an ice cold shower each afternoon or evening. Luckily for us, being farther north than you are, our temps have now gone way down to 18C (aprox 65F) The birds and squirrels which disappeared during the heatwave days have now mostly returned so I am wishing you, your birds and “critters” better, cooler, and wetter days soon. If your coyote pal’s approach to his morning routine helps keep your thoughts off the path from grumpy to being really p’d off about heatwaves, droughts and flash floods then post as many as you need to. And although I’m all out of chuckles and fellow feeling for most humans I can still enjoy laughing at a coyote. 😉🥱

  9. Love that photo. Coyotes are among my very favorite wildlife and am always looking forward to seeing one or two when I am out.
Hot temps for sure, but you would get no sympathy or empathy from my relatives and friends in Yuma, Tucson, and Lake Havasu City.
    Happy Labor Day to all.

  10. I smiled so hard it hurt my (face) cheeks.

    Take Care,
    Kaye

  11. Hope you get some relief SOON. We had the blistering heat and draught (still not completely over that) but got some good rains and the temps are much lower. Definitely a mood changer. Worse veggie garden we have ever had. Now if the fog will list and I can get some wildflower pics.

    • ” Worse veggie garden we have ever had.”

Me too, Jo. It isn’t even a horse race. Mine’s a complete disaster, with the minor exceptions of a few (very few) tomatoes, a few (very few) lemon cucumbers, some zukes, some rhubarb earlier in the spring and summer and a moderate crop of spaghetti squash.

I cannot say where I am as I read this post. But, it has a lot to do with this picture.

    This made me grin.

  13. Am I the only one who sees this dog is in serious need of some Ex-Lax? That or yawning, been there done that.

  14. Funny ! Strangely enough, I DREAMED of 2 coyotes just a couple of hours
    ago…..wonder if it’s a “heat”-thing ? ( mine weren’t pooping, just “skulking”,
as coyotes are wont to do ).

  15. Must be a teacher thing because I definitely laughed at (and identified with) this one!🤣

Those temps are ridiculous! My other half told me it got up to 107 yesterday — less than 10 minutes from the beach! I’m in the mountains for a camp reunion and we had some pretty strong T-storms for a couple of hours complete with pea-sized hail and a flash flood warning. Fortunately, the sun came out about an hour before the concert.

    • Marty, I’ve reached the point where even hail sounds good to me, at least it’s cold. And that’s coming from an old farmer who has some facsimile of a vegetable garden at the moment.

      • Amazing how that works……. 😉 Small flock of Gold Finches stopping over for grub and water on their way S the last coupld of days…….

  16. LMAO! 🙂 Boring but necessary activity…. 😉

Your forecast temps are NOT amusing. We get a break today and tomorrow – “only” high 80……..then Wed. 102 and, of course, not a drop of moisture in sight.. 🙁 Smoke again today tho, so far, not as bad as yesterday……

    • Judy, I see there’s smoke clear up in Glacier NP. That’s the one scourge we don’t have, yet. It’ll probably come when the heat dome breaks down, if it ever does.

Laughing I say thank you, Ron! Wish you were here ’cause its cool and there was some moisture last night.

  18. I yawned in empathy… and must admit, I didn’t need much encouragement!

Yes, we all need a good laugh at times, and especially in times such as these.

Thanks, Ron, and keep them coming!

  19. Very amusing!! Happy Labor Day Ron!
