The Yellow Warbler And The Beaver Pond

I probably like this shot more than I should. Maybe it’s mostly just because it’s different but there’s more to it than that.

A short post today. This procrastinator is working on his taxes, the deadline’s tomorrow and I’ve hit a snag so the IRS has priority.

Two days ago in the mountains this male Yellow Warbler made a brief appearance on an old stump below me and directly in front of a beaver pond. Beavers are very active in this area so there isn’t much nearby woody vegetation that doesn’t show evidence of their presence, including this stump. One of their dams has created the pond we see only a few inches behind and below the bird.

Some folks, landowners in particular, interpret the results of beaver activity as damage but I usually don’t see it that way. The pond has created habitat for a variety of plants, invertebrates and vertebrates, some of which I’ve been photographing for years, so I applaud the industry of North America’s largest rodent.

And maybe, just maybe, the warbler does too. After all, he’s singing about something…

  1. Nice warbler shot and, to me, nice that it is at a beaver pond. I get that beavers are difficult for landowners, but their work creates habitat, as you said. Plus, beaver dams improve the function of streams to slow down water flow and improve stream functioning and repair eroded stream beds. Beavers can repair a lot of damage to streams.

  2. What a delightful and cheerful photo! Love all the color – especially the bright yellow warbler! And the photo angle of the warbler is playful and fun! LOVE!! Feels like Spring 😄

  3. I hope you can join the songster with your taxes completed later today. I procrastinate big time on tax (and a few other things). I feel for you.
That colour just pops doesn’t it?

I love this little bit of sunshine. I imagine he is singing opera to the beavers.

  5. Gorgeous image—eye-popping colors and all the interesting elements, and with that pretty little singing warbler, what’s not to love? And I do love this!

I’ve been a procrastinator all my life — even in grad school, where I finally figured out, I’d never really been “punished” for it with a poor grade, so why change? But IRS punishment is a little scarier to contemplate, so I always file early…

      Ya think?

I’ve been meaning to change my procrastinating ways but I’ve been… putting it off.

  6. Nice splash of color. I hope the ranch owner respects the beavers on their property, the beaver creates a nice habitat for his cattle too.

Yes, Jon waits to do his last minute too. He got his done yesterday then realized it did not ask for some information, there is not a way to adjust the return once sent electronically so now he has to do a addendum.

  7. I like this photo quite a lot, too, and much I think I should. It’s got all the natural elements of Warbler, wood, water, leaves of grass all put together for a delightful image . Thanks to the Beavers and the photographer.

This is the only time of year that medical expenses are our friend.

  8. Love the brightness here. These yellow warblers are actually my most encountered warbler; I love their little song. I don’t find beavers here as much as I did in Michigan. Watching them working on their dams is quite interesting. Hoping you get those taxes ready on time. 😅 I didn’t figure you as a procrastinator.

    • “I didn’t figure you as a procrastinator”

Kathy, when it comes to unpleasant tasks that’s my natural tendency. During my freshman year in college, before I really learned how to study, it tended to get me behind the 8-ball when preparing for tests or turning in my work..

Yellow Warblers are the warbler species I see most often too.

That little Warbler is thanking the Beaver for providing such a neat spot for insect hunting. I remember watching a nature show on beavers once that featured both the positives and negatives of their presence in our rivers and creeks. Nice photo – love the colors.
Get those taxes done. I am guilty of procrastination regarding many things, but I always file my taxes early.

    • “but I always file my taxes early”

Everett, I usually don’t because I typically break about even or owe a little. But right now I wish I’d used a different strategy.

  10. The warbler looks happy and the blue and yellow are divine together!

  11. Beautiful! Singing his little heart out……. 🙂

Mixed feelings on the beaver – have a place in the mountains, not on the plains. Bank of the creek near the house is working on collapsing with their excavating over time and it’s constant work to prevent their “logging” efforts 😉

Good luck with the taxes! Fortunately, ours are long gone…..
