This male Cassin’s Finch was a pleasant surprise.

He was among the first subjects I photographed on this camping trip and I found him in a conifer near the Montana/Idaho border. He gave me a variety of poses in a setting I like so it was a good photographic beginning to the trip.
We had unexpected clouds and lousy light all day yesterday so things went downhill from there but as I type this at 4:30 AM the skies are mostly clear and filled with stars so I’m encouraged.
Now if only the birds cooperate today…

I love their color. Great shot. Hope you have some sunshine!
Oooh.
Amazing. An echo of the colours we often see in our dawn (but won’t today because of heavy cloud).
I hope your photographic joy starts at this piece of feathered enchantment and just keeps growing.
Gorgeous shot, Ron. My first thought was: Christmas card. You could make some money with that!
I like seeing this pretty little bird in context, especially when the context is as nice as this. The composition here is especially pleasing….good luck and happy shooting on the rest of your trip….
Beautifully detailed shot Ron!

Love the colors on this bird. Hope you have a flawless photography day.
Lovely
Beautiful shot of a beautiful little bird. 🙂 The “partly cloudy” we’re supposed to have had the last couple of days has been mostly cloudy with wind. 🙁 Oh well -spring time in Montana! 🙂 Hope it goes better today.
Ron: So nice in so many days. One shot like that would make my (entire) day! Thanks for sharing; your blog is great.
