Curious Swainson’s Hawk Checking Me Out In Flight

Occasionally soaring raptors fly in quite close to observers and I’m convinced that sometimes it’s simply a matter of curiosity.

That’s exactly what this light morph adult Swainson’s Hawk did with me a month ago in Montana’s Centennial Valley.  The sun was higher than I prefer (almost 10 am) so I didn’t get the right wing lit up (I don’t mind the shaded wing anyway) but I thought the rest of the bird looked good and I love the eye contact.  The intense blue sky may not appeal to everyone but this was taken in the wilds of “Big Sky Country” and that sky is often this blue.

Note:  I’m “on the road again”, camping and photographing in southern Utah.  As usual I’ll be without computer access so I’ll likely be mostly incommunicado for the duration, though intermittent cell phone access should allow me to read any comments that may be made (which I enjoy).  I’ve scheduled posts to be published in my absence.

  1. Feels like he was wondering if that was a mouse in your pocket and if you might want to let it loose. 😀

  2. WOW… One of the BEST Swainson’s Hawk in flight image I’ve seen. Salute to your image!!!

  3. Definitely a curious hawk. Around here, we call an expanse of blue sky like that ‘severe clear’, and it’s something I like a lot. It’s a background I expect to see with flight shots like this.

  4. Wonderful shot Ron!

  5. I don’t care what that hawk thinks…I don’t think you look like a vole at all!!!
