This past spring was a pretty good one around here for Sage Thrashers. There were more of them and they seemed more cooperative than usual.

I photographed this one on May 8 on Antelope Island. I deleted most of the shots because they were head-on and didn’t include a good look at the tail but when it started to groom and raised its wing I thought the behavior and wing angle made up for the mostly missing tail. Usually when they do this they close their nictitating membrane over the eye but I was lucky with the timing on this shot.
