Black-billed Magpie Just After Take-off

Each spring I spend time photographing magpies on Antelope Island.  Not many images of them are keepers but this is one I like.

1/4000, f/6.3, ISO 500, Canon 7D, 500 f/4 II, not baited, set up or called in

This bird and its mate had been occupied by nest-building all morning a few days ago and since that process includes carrying mud to line the interior chamber of the nest I’m surprised the beak is clean this time.  The background is mostly clean and featureless so I wasn’t even tempted to remove the twigs at lower right that were part of the perch this bird took off from.  I like the position of the wings and feet and was happy to get some iridescence.

  5. OH! Ron! That is so beautiful!!!! Love EVERYTHING about it!!, Fanning of wings, body position, position of feet, black-lined white primaries, iridescence…the hint of gray vegetation, the composition….I surprise myself by how smitten I’ve become by these elegant wise guys!!!!

  6. So precise…it looks like an Audubon etching!

  11. Ron- this is the shot I have been after for the maggie. In flight with gorgeous colors lit by good light. Great Capture of a simple bird!
