Short-eared Owl In Flight, With Prey

I’ve been frustrated by this species in flight in Utah for years, though I’ve had some luck with Montana birds.

Finally, last summer, I found a mated pair on Antelope Island who were busy trying to keep track of and feed at least four juveniles spread out over several acres. Occasionally one of the parents would fly by relatively close as it returned with a vole for the youngsters.  In larger versions of this image there’s a catch light in the eye of the vole but it’s impossible to see at this size.

  1. I agree with all of the other comments, Ron. When it comes to photographing raptors, “You’re da man!”

  2. I do believe you have (or are) a raptor magnet. Wonderful.

    • Thanks Dick. I’m highly interested in raptors so I put a lot of effort into photographing them. I’m lucky to live in a region that, during certain times of the year, has relatively large numbers of raptors. But they’re still usually difficult to get close to and since I don’t bait them in it can often be a frustrating endeavor.
