This post is an experiment.
I’m on the road right now, visiting the family farm in nw Montana where I grew up. As a result, these images were processed on my laptop so I’m unsure about sharpness, brightness, color and other aspects of processing. I’ve never posted from my laptop before but thought I’d take a chance and see what happens…
All three of these images were taken on the farm in the last 24 hours.

There has been a breeding pair of Great Horned Owls on the farm for many years now, residing in the multiple old barns and granaries. This is the male.

As we came down the hill toward the house this morning I spotted these two White-tail fawns drinking in the creek. It seems to me that they’re pretty young for so late in the year.

The Gray Partridge is common on the farm but extremely difficult to approach. This is as close as I’ve been able to get so far but you can bet I’ll be working to get closer until we leave for home. (I was at f/11 because I was trying to photograph multiple birds as they scurried through the grass).
This species used to be called the Hungarian Partridge, so everyone up here has always called them “huns”.
So far it’s been a great trip and I hope to have lots of images to post when we return.
Ron
PS: I hope you don’t mind. I linked to both Mia and yourself in my latest post about our magpies.
Of course I don’t mind Elephant’s Child, I’m delighted. Thank you.
Fabulous photos!!! AS USUAL…. Owls look so intelligent. So capable. What wonderful creatures! They are my mom’s favorite… I loved the fawns too and the Hun! I signed up to go on local Audubon walks around the area here! I have an aunt who is a bird lover and takes lots of photos of her wonderful creatures and I just discovered that my sister is also turning into a birder, and you! All my inspiration… Thanks so much!
Thank you Nicole. Audubon walks are a great resource for those who love birds and other wildlife.
I loved them all, but I have a huge weakness for owls. Mega thanks. And I will certainly be looking forward to future posts from this trip.
I have the same weakness as you do Elephant’s Child.
Wow, what great shots! And the “hun” is new to me! You are so lucky to have such a refuge!
The Gray Partridge is “new” to a lot of folks Tana – it’s range is fairly limited.
Well, I must say, Ron, I think you absolutely nailed all three. That first shot of the owl, is incredible. It needs to be hanging in a gallery. Love that rustic wood framing. Plus the coloring on the owl is right on.
Thank you Bob. The GHO image isn’t likely to hang in a gallery but it may soon be hanging on a wall…
