Just a Shot That I Like…#3 – Chukar In Snow

The Chukar is a type of partridge that was introduced to Antelope Island many years ago and they thrive there.   They’re originally native to Asia and are a popular game bird, though their range in North America is restricted because they thrive only in areas of low rainfall and humidity.

I found this one last winter on a boulder just after a fresh snow fall.  Though the white part of the background may look like clouds it is actually a snowy hillside with blue sky above.

I like the soft colors, coy pose, rocky perch and the snow in the setting with the blue sky up top.  Some may miss seeing the feet but that’s a trade-off I’ll gladly make to catch this handsome bird in the snow.

  1. This is as good as a photograph gets. Epic.

  2. Amazing!

  3. It is a WOW shot. The white snow background draws attention to the detail in the plumage. I like the pose too, the color of the rocks matching the color of the bird, and the red of the eye ring and beak.

  4. You’re right. That blue sky gives the image a nice feel. The Chukar colors look fantastic with the white bokeh.

  5. This is still just as beautiful as it was that crisp winter day when we found this Chukar in the snow. I hope we get more chances like this one this coming winter.

  6. What an enchanting bird. I love the red-rimmed eye, and the dark plumage that runs across its eye and curves under its neck. Thanks.
